Geoff Johns, Gary Frank and Jonathan Sibal begin a long story arc that send Superman into the future, re-uniting him with the revived classic Legion of Super-Heroes in Action 858 (Late Dec. 07).
The story opens in the far future, the time of the Legion, as an alien baby lands on Earth, rocketed to the planet by his parents before their world explodes. The baby is found by an Earth couple – who promptly kill it. NOt the kind of thing one expects in the pristine future of the Legion.
Jumping back to the present, Superman sees what appears to be a Brainiac construct. When he reaches it, it turns out to have been sent from the future by Brainiac 5, programmed to remove the mental bloacks, allowing Superman to remember the team from the future that he used to hang out with.
The story then jumps back one more time, re-telling the first meeting between teenage Clark Kent and Lightning Lad, Cosmic Boy and Saturn Girl, and his recruitment into the Legion.
Brainiac 5 explains that the team desperately needs his help, and he flies into the future.
When he arrives, he finds the Legion headquarters in ruins, vandalized. He is immediately attacked by armed police, who do not believe he is Superman. Colossal Boy, Dawnstar and Wildfire come to his rescue. And he needs a rescue. The Earth’s sun is now red, and his powers are waning.
The story continues in the next issue.
