Stern, Perez and Breeding have two Supermen fighting it out in Action 644 (Aug. 89).
Matrix, believing that it is Clark Kent, and possessing most of his memories, is trying to live happily in Smallville with Ma and Pa Kent, and Lana Lang, but is just terrorizing them. Superman cannot approach with stealth, as the closer they get, the more their minds link and overlap.
Matrix pays no attention to the fact that it displays powers that Superman does not have, invisibility and psi-blasts. The creature’s mind genuinely believes that the real Superman is an impostor, and he fights with all his might.
Only when Superman draws attention to the danger Matrix is creating, and its willingness to kill, which Superman will not do, does the creature regain control. Regretting its actions, it flies off into endless space. Never to be seen again.
Or at least, not for a couple of years.
