Action 889 – Nightwing & Flamebird and Captain Atom end

act_889

Rucka, Trautman, Perez and Bergantino bring the Nightwing and Flamebird series to a grand finale in Action 880 (Late June 2010).

act_889_001

Chris emerges from the Phantom Zone, powered by the Nightwing of legend.  The Justice Society and Wonder Woman are on their last legs against Rao.

act_889_002

It’s quite the battle, climaxing as Flamebird uses her power to destroy Jax-Ur, as Rao gets sucked into the Phantom Zone by Nightwing.

act_889_004

Love the shot of them kissing as their powers wane and they return to their normal bodies.  They head off into War Against the Superman, so I am also glad their own series ended on a really happy note. Of all the variations of Nightwing and Flamebird over the years, these were by far the most interesting and effective.

act_889_005

Captain Atom’s chapter ends with an epilogue, by Robinson and Urbano. Aggarro reveals that he is Mordru, and this realm will become Zerox, the sorceror’s world, in time.  Captain Atom is taken aback, he knows of Mordru as a villain.  Mordru explains that in the world Atom lives in, he would be perceived that way.  But following with an idea built in Legion of Suepr-Heroes, Mordru is also the right one to rule Zerox, the one who can control the planet’s wild magic.

act_889_006

Mordru sends Captain Atom and Zachary Zatara back to the real world, and he returns just in time to take part in Justice League Generation Lost.

Action 888 – Wonder Woman and the JSA join the battle, and Captain Atom triumphs

act_888

The gigantic Rao draws the attention of Wonder Woman and the Justice Society in Action 888 (Early June 2010), which effectively explains why none of these characters are involved in the New Krypton climax.

act_888_001

Rucka, Trautman and Perez send Justice Society members Flash, Green Lantern, Dr. Fate and Mr. Terrific to aid Flamebird against Rao and Jax-Ur.  The heroes do their best, but barely have an impact.  Even Dr. Fate is outmatched by the Kryptonian legendary being.

act_888_002

While this is going on, Chris is in the new Phantom Zone, and meets the Nightwing entity.  The Nightwing is much like Aether, from the final issue of DC Comics Presents, a sentient personification of the Phantom Zone.  Chris merges with the Nightwing.

act_888_003

Captain Atom sure doesn’t look triumphant at the start of this chapter, by Robinson and Urbano.  Mirabia plans to make him another slave, alongside Zatara.

act_888_004

Aggarro makes him realize that Mirabai’s magic is all illusion. He is not defeated, he simply perceives that he is.  Captain Atom gets his shit together, and takes Mirabai down.

Action 887 – building Rao, and readying for war

act_887

Action 887 (May 2010) is billed as part of Last Stand of New Krypton, but really isn’t part of that story arc.

act_887_001

The eponymous hero of the Web, a short-lived book, makes a cameo, fixing Lois Lane’s computer, on the first page of this story, by Rucka, Trautman and Perez.

act_887_002

She then heads out to the Middle East, to cover the events there, and we read her article on the battle between Nightwing and Flamebird, and Jax-Ur’s creation, which he claims to be the god Rao.

act_887_003

Rao absorbs all the energy thrown at it, just getting larger.

act_887_004

Jax-Ur sends Chris back into the Phantom Zone, effectively re-creating it with the Nightwing.

act_887_005

Captain Atom’s chapter, by Robinson and Urbano, continues the rapid pace of this series.  He searches Skartaris, and finds Aggarro and the others he fought with.

act_887_006

They explain about Mirabia, the woman working with Sam Lane.  She now has Zachary Zatara under her spell, and readies her forces for the attack.

Action 886 – the legend of Nightwing and Flamebird, and Captain Atom sees the map

act_886

Rucka, Trautman and Perez are joined by Fernando Dagnino and Raul Fernandez as the story delves into the legend that the starring heroes take their names from, in Action 886 (April 2010).

act_886_001

Thara is getting tired of Chris’s insecurities, and his disbelief that she is the Flamebird of legend.  But Chris does not really know the story, not having been raised on Krypton, and she gives him a crystal encoded with the tale.

act_885_004

So as Chris learns the story, so does the reader.  In Kryptonian theology, there is a creator, who builds for the glory of the Flamebird.  The Flamebird destroys each things he makes, to spur him on to greater achievements.  The creator loves the Flamebird, but the Flamebird is fascinated by a creature who lives in darkness, the mysterious Nightwing.

act_886_002

The creator’s jealousy builds, as does his resentment that nothing he makes is good enough for the Flamebird.  Finally, he murders the Nightwing, to give the Flamebird the same pain he feels.

act_886_003

Chris is convinced, and the two are quite happy, until Jax-Ur shows up.  He is the creator, determined to destroy the Nightwing again.

act_886_004

In the Captain Atom chapter, by Robinson, Urbano and Bergantino, the Shadowpact show Captain Atom a map of the magical realms, including the 5th Dimension, Myrrah, the Nightshade realm, Hell, and Gemworld.  But the place that Captain Atom has to go to enter the realm he wants is accessible in the far north.

act_886_005

Captain Atom flies to the arctic, and finds the entrance to the inner world of Skartaris.

Action 885 – Nightwing and Flamebird caught, and Captain Atom defends himself

act_885

The Guardian takes in Nightwing and Flamebird in Rucka, Trautman and Perez’s story in Action 885 (March 2010).

act_884_007

As Dr. Light and Jax-Ur finish their examination of Nightwing, the Guardian and the Science Police show up to arrest them.  Mon-El also arrives, and demands that the pair be kept safe, and insists on staying with them.

act_885_001

Lois Lane also shows up, as does Sam Lane and a new Squad K.  It’s a big stand-off in the Science Police headquarters, and not likely to go well.

act_885_002

But the one who ends it is Car-Vex, undercover as one of Lane’s soldiers, sets off a bomb, destroying the building.

act_885_003

Robinson and Urbano put Captain Atom through a wringer in this chapter, as he faces an angry Justice League.  The last most knew of him was his transformation into Monarch during Countdown.

act_845

Captain Atom’s speech t the League is summarized rather than shown.  Likely a good thing, as the Leaguers comment on how repetitive and self-pitying it is.  He insists that he needs to get back to the magical realm.

act_845_001

So the League contact Shadowpact.  Blue Devil, Detective Chimp, Enchantress and Ragman show up.

Action 884 – Lois Lane – traitor, and Captain Atom gets some answers

act_884

Lois Lane gets into trouble in Action 884 (Feb. 10), by Rucka, Trautman, Perez and Bergantino.

act_884_001

Perry White warns Lois that her latest article, exposing her father’s manipulations, and the framing of the Kryptonians for the murder of Mon-El, has attracted government interest, and that she is now wanted for treason.  But it’s Steve Lombard who plays the hero, tackling the government agent to help Lois escape. She still winds up getting caught, but it’s nice to see Lombard being noble.

act_884_002

Dr. Pillings performs tests on Chris, which cause him intense pain.  The real purpose is to goad Flamebird until her powers manifest. He then reveals himself as Jax-Ur, but makes a deal with her, to save Chris’s life.  Just some genetic material.

act_884_003

Lois and Sam Lane see each other for the first time since Our Worlds at War, and she probably regrets every tear she shed.  He shoots her laptop, and warns her that his love for her is the only reason she isn’t dead.

act_884_004

Maintaining the ruse of being Pillings, Jax-Ur enlists Dr. Hoshi’s help, as Dr. Light, to super-charge Nightwing’s cells, over-riding the disease itself, which does cure him, and brings him back to being in his early 20s.

act_884_005

In the Captain Atom chapter, by Robinson and Urbano, Mon-El fills Atom in on what has been going on, New Krypton, the anti-Kryptonian sentiment and all. He brings Captain Atom to the JLA satellite, where others who know him better can help.  And, indeed, Starfire seems pleased to see him.

act_884_006

On the other hand, Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Black Canary, Cyborg, the Atom, Dr. Light and Congorilla do not.  It’s a busy day for Dr. Light, it seems.  And wow, Congo Bill has made it back into the pages of Action Comics once again!

Action 883 – Jax-Ur makes his move, and Captain Atom comes home

act_883

Rucka and Perez are joined by Eric Trautman as Jax-Ur is introduced, the first version of this classic villain since Crisis on Infinite Earths.

act_883_001

He’s a lot thinner than the classic version, but just as evil and far more creepy, as he wipes out everyone at an archeological dig.

act_883_002

Nightwing and Flamebird battle Brimstone on the CN Tower!  I had moved to Toronto only a few months before this issue came out, so I guess it happened before I got here. I know I would have remembered that.

act_883_003

Perry White is approached by a friend of Jimmy Olsen, worried about how long he has been missing.  In fact, Jimmy has not been seen for months, not since the end of his Jimmy Olsen Special, when Codename: Assassin shot him, and he fell into the river and sunk to the bottom.  Perry agrees to look into it.

act_883_004

Which he does, finding a note hidden in Jimmy’s apartment.

act_883_005

Nightwing and Flamebird review the list of sleeper agents on Earth.  This is the one and only time we see the comprehensive list.  Quex-Ul and Car-Vex are both dealt with in other books.

act_883_006

Jax-Ur has taken on a human identity, Dr. Pillings, showing enough scientific wisdom that Dr. Hoshi calls on him to help her understand the pod that Brimstone emerged from.

act_883_007

So Jax-Ur just happens to be in the right place at the right time, as Thara brings Chris, now aged dramatically, to Dr. Light for help.

act_883_008

Robinson, Rucka, Urbano and Bergantino really keep the Captain Atom story clipping along.  Atom explains to Natasha that Major Force is basically his arch enemy. and then they begin to fight.

act_883_009

It’s not really a contest, as Major Force only has to get Captain Atom out of the magic realm, and back to Earth, at the orders of his military commanders.

act_883_010

When they emerge, Captain Atom is surrounded by Major Force’s armed men, but Mon-el blasts his way through them.

Action 882 – Reactron shows his stuff, and Captain Atom learns his place

act_882

The Hunt for Reactron, by Rucka, Gates and Perez, continues in Action 882 (Dec.09).

act_882_001

Sam Lane sends off Squad K, a military group under the command of Colonel Hazard, introduced a couple of years earlier in Superman, with Reactron along, to capture Nightwing, Flamebird and Supergirl.

act_882_002

Lana Lang arranges a meeting between Chris and Lois, while Thara and Supergirl try to patch up their differences, and be best friends again.

act_882_003

Squad K does fly-bys throughout Metropolis, and Chris jumps to the bait.  Flamebird and Sueprgirl get involved, as does the Guardian.  Though Supergirl does not want to, Nightwing and Flamebird insist they all stop fighting and give up, in order to argue their case, and the guilt of Reactron, to Colonel Hazard.  Reactron pretty much clears up any confusion as he kills Hazard.

The Hunt for Reactron concludes in the next issue of Supergirl, but World Against Superman continues in the next issue of this book.

act_882_004

Captain Atom wakes up in a magic fairyland in this chapter, by Rucka, Robinson and Urbano.

act_882_005

Natasha Irons reveals who she is, which isn’t that much of a surprise, as they didn’t make her look any different.  Captain Atom learns that he is being used as a weapon by the US military, which she has infiltrated, as she tried to keep an eye on him.  She has been working with the magic people for a while.  Atom is not happy to learn that he has been used to kill people, but flashes back to his past as a killer.

act_882_006

But just as plans can be laid by the rebels, Major Force reveals himself.

Action 881 – Supergirl, Nightwing and Flamebird damage the Eiffel Tower, and Captain Atom

act_881

Sterling Gates joins Rucka and Perez, as Supergirl joins Nightwing and Flamebird for a four-part crossover with the larger World Against Superman story arc.  The Hunt for Reactron begins in Action 881 (Nov. 09), and continues both in this book and in Sueprgirl.

act_881_001

Following on the conclusion to Codename: Patriot, Supergirl, Nightwing and Flamebird get teleported into the middle of Metropolis, as tv screens everywhere show footage of the three apparently murdering Mon-El.

act_881_002

The Guardian and the Science Police try to arrest them, but the three fly off.

act_881_003

They head to one of Supergirl’s hideouts, this one in Paris.  It doesn’t take long to figure out that magic was used on Metallo and Reactron again, in order to frame the Kryptonians.  Flamebird listens to the people around the world, and is saddened by the hate people have for them.  She also hears Chris profess his love for her, to Supergirl, and then Sueprgirl warning him that Thara thinks the Flamebird is real, and has visions and voices in her head.

act_881_004

Things aren’t going that well for Lois, either.  The military will not give her any information about her father, and Cat Grant, as she prepares to go on Morgan Edge’s show, all but threatens Lois that being a well-known friend of Superman makes her loyalty suspect.

act_881_005

Supergirl and Flamebird’s argument turns into a fight, and spills into the streets, and monuments, in Paris, drawing attention, and a military response.

The story continues in Supergirl.

act_881_006

There’s a big change of narrative in this chapter of Rucka, Robinson and Urbano’s Captain Atom, as we see a military group spying on him from afar, and learn that he has been a brainwashed pawn up till now.

act_881_007

Seeing the military attack Captain Atom, the magic people decide he could be an ally, and capture him, as well as one of the soldiers.

act_881_008

Action 880 – Codename: Patriot comes to Earth, and Captain Atom remembers

act_880

Sam Lane’s devious plans come together in Action 880 (Oct 09), by Rucka, Robinson, Lopez and Bergantino.  This issue is the second chapter in the Codename: Patriot story arc, running through the Superman books this month.

act_880_001

Ral-Dar heads to Earth, chased by Superman and Supergirl.  To distract them, he uses his heat vision on some fighter jets.  The cousins give up the chase to save the pilots, and are aided by Mon-El.

act_880_002

As they bring the pilots to ground, they are confronted by the Guardian and the Science Police, as well as the media.  After months apart, Superman and Lois Lane see each other, but with a compete lack of privacy that prevents them from showing the affection they want to.  It’s a good scene.

act_880_003

Meanwhile, Ral-Dar makes it to General Lane.  He is kept under the watch of Atlas, but Lane plays Ral-Dar like a harp, manipulating him by making him think they are working together against a joint enemy.  Morgan Edge also appears in this issue, out of prison and back on television with his show, the Edge of Reason, in which he argues vehemently against Kryptonians and their supporters.

act_880_004

Nightwing and Flamebird have been hovering around the Hollywood sign, hoping to draw out Az-Rel and Nadira.  They begin to get very distracted, with each other, and only when they are locked in an embrace to their prey show up.  Nightwing and Flamebird get lured by the pair into the sewer system.

act_880_005

There, we discover that Nightwing and Flamebird have actually been following Metallo and Reactron, made to look like the others by the magic of Miri.  The kryptonite hearts take down the heroes, who get brought to General Lane.

The story continues in Supergirl.

act_880_006

Rucka, Robinson and Urbano continue the Captain Atom story, as he wanders through the killing fields.  People shun him, or attack him.  But he has no real idea where he is or what is going on.

act_880_007

As the chapter ends, he does manage to recall that he is Nathaniel Adam, Captain Atom, but still has no idea what this magical realm is.
